WHEN TO SCHEDULE

When Should You Schedule an Electrical Inspection?

Older Homes

Older Louisville and Kentuckiana homes may contain electrical equipment or wiring installed decades ago. An inspection can help you better understand what is currently in the home and whether anything deserves additional attention.

After Purchasing a Home

A general home inspection can provide valuable information, but homeowners sometimes want a licensed electrician to take a closer look at the electrical system after purchasing a property or when questions arise from the inspection report.

s

Recurring Electrical Problems

Frequently tripped breakers, flickering lights, warm outlets, unusual odors, buzzing sounds, or other recurring problems can indicate that part of the electrical system needs to be evaluated.

t

Questions About Previous Electrical Work

If you have recently moved into a home or discovered electrical work you are uncertain about, an electrician can evaluate the accessible components and help you understand what is installed.

Before a Remodel or Major Upgrade

Planning a renovation, EV charger, new appliance, finished basement, room addition, or other project? Evaluating the existing electrical system can help identify potential needs before work begins.

For Greater Peace of Mind

You may simply want to know more about the condition of your home’s electrical system. A professional evaluation can help identify concerns before they become larger problems.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

What Does a Residential Electrical Inspection Include?

Every home is different, so what can be evaluated depends on the home’s electrical system and what is accessible during the appointment.

During an electrical safety inspection, our electricians may evaluate areas such as:

Electrical panels and breakers

Visible wiring & electrical connections

Outlets & switches

GFCI protection

Grounding & bonding components

Signs of overheating or electrical damage

Outdated or damaged electrical equipment

Electrical conditions related to recurring problems

Other accessible components of the home’s electrical system

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

A Professional Electrical Evaluation, Not a Permit Inspection

A residential electrical safety inspection from Laswell is different from an official inspection associated with permitted electrical work.

Our licensed electricians evaluate the condition and safety of your home’s accessible electrical system. The purpose is to help you understand existing conditions, identify potential concerns, and determine whether repairs, replacements, or additional evaluation may be appropriate.

NEXT STEPS

What Happens If We Find a Problem?

Finding an electrical concern does not automatically mean your home needs a major upgrade. We will explain what we see, discuss whether it requires immediate attention or can be planned for later, and provide recommendations when repairs or upgrades are appropriate.

The next step might involve an electrical repair, outlet or switch replacement, wiring work, an electrical panel upgrade, surge protection, or another residential electrical service.

Arash was kind and informative. He also went the extra mile when the new GFCI outlet, which was bigger and better, did not fit this old house. He came back the next day and fixed my backsplash so the face plate would fit perfectly. Arash is truly a jack of all trades with a very pleasant personality. Thank you, Arash!

Though it turned out I didn't need an Electrician for what I was wanting, I wanted to comment on McKenzie for having a pleasant and professional mannerism over the phone when contacting the office and also, Bobby, who came out to access what I had called for, but politely explained that what I was describing to him was not for an Electrician (because I didn't have that in mind), but a handyman would be able to install a Wireless motion sensor light. I appreciated his honesty and he didn't try and talk me into doing anything else. Thank you!

I had an emergent electrical problem. Laswell staff are understanding, kind treated my problem with urgency! Chad made a call and got started helping me the minute they opened. My problem was resolved the same day, they even made the call to LGE to get my electricity restored. If I could give them 10 stars, I would! Thank you Laswell!

Residential Electrical Inspection FAQs

What is the difference between an electrical safety inspection and a permit inspection?

Laswell provides evaluations of the condition and safety of existing residential electrical systems. An official inspection associated with permitted electrical work is performed through the appropriate local authority and is a different process.

When should I have my home's electrical system inspected?

An inspection may be appropriate if you live in an older home, experience recurring electrical problems, have questions about previous electrical work, are planning renovations or major electrical upgrades, or simply want to better understand the condition of your system.

Can you inspect an older home's electrical system?

Yes. Older homes are one of the common reasons homeowners request electrical evaluations. Our electricians can examine accessible electrical components and identify areas that may deserve additional attention.

Can you inspect my electrical panel?

Yes. The electrical panel is an important part of the home’s electrical system. We can evaluate its visible condition and discuss concerns related to aging equipment, damage, capacity, or other electrical issues.

What if you find an electrical problem?

We will explain what we find and discuss the appropriate next steps. Some concerns may require repair or replacement, while others may simply need monitoring or additional evaluation.

Can an electrical inspection help before a renovation?

Yes. Evaluating the existing electrical system before a remodel or major upgrade can help identify potential electrical needs before the project begins.
