Fireworks, Food, and… Fire Hazards?: Outdoor Electrical Safety Tips
Your July 4th celebration might include grilling, outdoor games, festive lighting, and a speaker system blasting patriotic tunes. But before you plug in those string lights or run an extension cord to your cooler, take a moment to plan for electrical safety. Here’s how to power your party without the risk.
1. Use Only Outdoor-Rated Extension Cords
Not all extension cords are created equal. For outdoor use, always choose a cord labeled “Outdoor” or “Weather-Resistant.” These are designed to handle exposure to sunlight, moisture, and abrasion.
Look for:
- A heavy-duty cord with a grounding prong (3-prong plug)
- UL-listed or ETL-listed products
- A gauge rating of 14 or lower (the lower the number, the thicker the wire and the more power it can handle)
2. Keep Extension Cords Away from High-Traffic Areas
Cords running across walkways, patios, or lawns can become tripping hazards—especially at night. Run cords along the edges of your space and use cord covers or tape to secure them safely.
Never:
- Run cords under rugs or furniture (can cause overheating)
- Staple or nail cords in place
Better yet, reduce the need for extension cords altogether, Laswell Electric can install outdoor outlets where you need them most.
3. Don’t Overload Your Circuit or Cord
Plugging too many devices into one extension cord or outlet can lead to overheating or even fire.
Know the limits:
- Add up the wattage of all connected items
- Stay under the maximum wattage rating printed on the extension cord tag
- Use a power strip with surge protection for multiple low-wattage items (like string lights)
4. Use GFCI Outlets or Adapters
If you’re plugging in lights or cords outdoors, they must be protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). These prevent shock in wet conditions. If your outlet isn’t GFCI, use a portable GFCI adapter.
Tip: Many modern outdoor outlets already have GFCI protection built in—look for a “reset” and “test” button.
5. Choose the Right Outdoor Lights
Planning to decorate with patriotic string lights or lanterns? Make sure they’re rated for outdoor use and in good condition—no frayed wires or cracked sockets.
Safe lighting options:
- LED string lights (they use less power and run cooler)
- Solar-powered path lights
- Battery-powered lanterns or table lamps
